Hollywood careers don’t get off to a much better start. Plucked from obscurity, Hailee Steinfeld was thrust into the spotlight winning the lead role in the Coen Brothers “True Grit” and then wowing everyone by going to toe-to-toe with Jeff Bridges for the entire film. Since then she’s been lining up a handful of projects, including a new take on “Romeo & Juliet” as well as the comedy “Rosaline,” and now she’s adding another big film to her ever-growing plate.
Steinfeld has come aboard ”Can A Song Save Your Life?” with Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson from “Once” writer/director John Carney. He’s penned the script here as well, telling another music-centered story that this time follows Gretta (Johansson) who moves with her long-time boyfriend to New York so they can pursue their passion for music. She’s heartbroken when he dumps her for the fame and fortune of a big solo contract, leaving Gretta all on her own. Her world takes a turn for the better when a down-on-his-luck record producer (Ruffalo) stumbles upon her singing in a local bar and is immediately captivated by her raw talent and inspiring authenticity — they may be each other’s last chance to turn their lives around. Steinfeld will play the producer’s daughter.
The project will also mark Steinfeld’s entry into the Judd Apatow fold, as he is serving as a producer on the project. All in all, this is shaping up quite nicely and once Steinfeld is done shooting Shakespeare in Italy, he’ll hit New York this summer to begin lensing ‘Can A Song.’
I’m not a Johansson fan at all, but the combination of Ruffalo, Steinfeld and Carney gives me goosebumps.
My bosses are producing this! Really excited to see this come together.
